oh yeah always remember when your building your computer ground yourself.... try to be as naked as posible... as you can see your body conducts static electricity and if you aren't grounded then the static electricity in your body can short-circit some of the chips in your system. all have to do to get rid of the static is to touch anything metal for like 5 - 10 seconds and your safe, just do it every once in awhile just to be on the safe side.

Or you could stop being cheap and be a bit professional and buy an anti-static wrist band for ~$5.

Don't ever wear one when you are working inside a monitor.

For $900 you sould be able to build a near "top of the line" computer.

I'm talking Gig of ram, AMD 64bit, and a 9800xt.. If you have a couple hundred dollars more you could go out and buy the Geforce 6800.

Ive had my computer since like...1996. We just upgraded it a bit, got a new case and everything. BUT. I loved those push in power buttons on the old cases. Where no matter WHAT HAPPENS, it shuts off when you press the power button, its like a toggle power button. My new one sucks ass, you have to press it lightly or it gets stuck inside and turns on and off over and over. If I want my computer off, I have to flip the power switch in the back, because itll turn back on.

Aphex is so right on in her staement of not buying a MOBO-processor combo! Buy them seperately! Also spend the extra bux on the processor and get the Retail package! In doing this you get a heatsink and fan designed for that processor! And yes they are correct in that you should get 512 memory--But i did say in my earlier post that you can find deals on 2 sticks of 256 memory. The sales I have seen the 2 sticks are cheaper than the 1 single stick of 512. on a decent MOBO you will get 3 slots for memory so you will still have room for more memory if you choose to put more in!
Fry's is OK to get computer stuff at. I have found way better deals with Newegg.com though.

Since this is your first computer:

Get a good barebones kit to start with. I like Soyo's kits. Make sure it has plenty of drive bays if you want to upgrade later. Like Kendril said, you want to make sure the motherboard included has built in ethernet and sound.

Don't skimp out on ram, 512MB is a good minimum these days. Also be sure you know what kind of ram you need before purchasing it. The motherboard's spec sheet should include information on this.

The CPU is another crucial decision. You will be limited on choices depending on your motherboard. Once again, the motherboard's spec sheet should include information on this.

Harddrive: You don't need to go overkill on the size, but get at least an 80GB. Make sure your harddrive has a speed of at least 7200rpm.

I've covered the essentials for your computer and leave the rest to you :P.
I suggest http://http://www.pricewatch.com/ as a place to browse for parts.

You might want to say some $$$ if you don't have a home network. This is going to be the 3rd PC in your house, lol.

heh and they dont charge on parts, only labor. The site is aweful, but they do good work.

BTW my harddrives are crap, so it wasnt worth mentioning, my main drive is a 100 gig ATA 100 72,000 RPM western digital. My next purchase is going to be a 250 GB sata, should the specs prove to run faster then the IDE ATA100 standard.
