Radeon 9800XT Temperature..

My graphics card was overheating when I played Doom3 in 1600x1200 with 12x AA..  it was getting up to like 78 degrees celcius.. so I ordered a new fan for it, and now it idles at 60 and goes up to 68 with Doom3 on all max settings.  That's still pretty damn hot though..  trying to decide if it's worth getting like a peltier cooling system or not.  Is 60-68 an ok temperature for the card?

Doom3 in 1600x1200 with 12x AA.

Not a good idea for a Radeon 9800XT.  Drop it down to 2x AA or none at all, since Doom III is very forgiving about that kind of thing, since its so dark.  Take the resolution down a notch too.  And if its on ultra quality mode, bring it down to just high quality settings, because the difference is almost unrecognizable.

My 9800pro runs pretty hot too.  I should find a heatspreader for the back of the core or something.

Well it was getting pretty hot in other games, and even when I wasn't playing any at all..  now that it's down to like 68 max, it runs fine and I don't get any of those white snow things in Doom3 anymore.  No lag at all, and no more signs of overheating..  I think it's running at a good temperature now.

I need to find somewhere that shows the average temperature for the card..

XT cards are supposed to come with on-board temperature monitors/sensors.  Perhaps you can use motherboard monitor 5 and check the temperature on that sensor.

I know the temp on my card, but I don't know what it's supposed to be at.  The card idles at 60 and runs at 68 when I'm playing doom3.

If your card isn't causing VPU crashes or system hangs, don't worry about it.  They'll quit working before they melt down.

Video cards run hot--always.  Since that fact is known, they're designed with higher temps in mind.  They have to be able to run in an average system with a full sized card in the slot below it.

Lw this lowers the temp by 20 or so degrees.. they take a little bit of time to put on but its worth it

You made the right choise with that cooling solution.  I myself am thinking of making some plastic clips to clip an 80mm fan to the end of the 9800pro, blowing air across the card speeding the hot air out the exaust fan.
