T:V open beta started
« on: August 28, 2004 03:37 am CDT »
Just to clue some of you in, T:V open beta started, for the first week its for FP subscribers only, after that its available for all.

A few notes...

You need a unique cd-key for it to work. Closed beta keys will not work. You only get 1 key per fp account. A fp subscriber account is like $7 for a month. (in otherwords, no you cant share, no your warezed T:V versions wont work, nor will thier keys, and yes you have to subscribe and pay MONEY to get it for the first week)

I hate FP.  Long lines unless you want to fork over a lot of money every month.  I prefer to find the filename and find one of a thousand other places without waits.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

Yeah.. I normally never use FP unless there is no wait, but for some reason my old account is still working.  I payed 3.95 when CS 1.6 came out, and you couldn't find it anywhere..  guess that 3.95 payed off in the end!  The month I payed for ended like a year ago..  oddly enough it still works o_O

$7 a month is alot of money?

Consider it a pre-open beta, everyone can d/l it [for free] after a month. There are free ftp's hosted already though if you know where to find them, but you wont be able to get a key.

T:V is my new favorite game..  they definately hit the nail on the head with this one, minus a few bugs like one where you get stuck and can't move (even if you are in the middle of nowhere with nothing aroun you).

It isn't a lot of money in general, but it is when you consider that it is to download free files.

Eh your loss i guess.

But i must agree, T:V sure seems like a great game so far, but im saving my final verdict till i have played it a full month at least. There are a few bad things about the game itself [not bugs]

One thing i HATE is thier inv system. Man, the one thing T2 accualy did do right, was have a simple, fast and effective inventory system for fast favorites. T:V's inv's not only look retarded, but they are retarded.

Also the voice chat. By default you must hold down the shift button to activate it, and must continue to hold it down as you cycle through things to say. Why couldnt they just leave Tribes chat alone, it was perfect....vgx.

Other than that, the game plays very much like Tribes, the skiing system is dumbed down, but at least it works good. I also love how good heavys are now, much more agile and versitile. I'v always played HO on tribes, playing HO on T:V is just as good if not better than it was on tribes, im really impressed.

I like the inventory system they have..  there's a quick-menu for your favorites by simply pressing shift+q or shift+a or whatever favorite you want to use, or you can enter the inventory by pressing F.  I haven't really used the voicechat much yet..  but i'm sure you can change it to just V or whatever.

I'll save my final verdict for after I play for a month also.
My dad subscribes to FP so I used his account to download it.
So far, here are my observations.

1)Inventories are terrible.
I beleive this because I, for one(I know I am more or less alone on this issue) liked the T1 style of invo purchasing more than the T2. The T2 was at LEAST quick and easy to adapt to, but from what I have seen the T:V invos are... well...

As Matanza said. I agree with him on that point.

2)Gameplay has YET AGAIN been sacrificed.
Let me say nothing is greater than a well organized clan battle in Tribes 1. The gameplay is astounding, in that it is simple yet fun, and can be extremely organized. Maddox's site sums up what I am trying to say very nicely. Follow this link( http://www.maddox.xmission.com/c.cgi?u=video_games ) to read more. Read the first paragraph and the first sentence of the next paragraph.

3) Lag.
This is most likely because it's in a beta state still. However, a server with 14 people shouldn't be lagging... especially when there are only about 150 players on the entire game. I hope this is fixed.

4) Where are the skins???
Maybe I'm doing something wrong but skins don't appear to be working. Yet to come, I assume.

Edit===

Skiing system is holding the spacebar. There's no longer any need to jump before jetting, which makes it feel uncomfortable.

Also making heavies agile defeats the point of the armor in the first place. They're SUPPOSED to be buffalos.

Overall so far about a 4/10.

You mean like, going into the inventory and hitting shift q and it buys your favorites? That's just like in Tribes 1.. (You bind your favorites to whatever you want)    :?

I don't see any problem with the inventory stations..  just set your favorites, press shift+aletter, and go..  what's so hard about that?  In tribes 1, there are scripts to do that very same thing for you..  they just made it built in in T:V.

So far, the gameplay is pretty good..  it's definately much better than T2.  I'm running it on a really nice system, so lag really isn't a factor for me, but I think the gameplay is great.  You guys are all looking for another T1, but there never will be..  you will just have to get used to a new type of gameplay!  Tribes 1 is dead, which means it's time for a new game..  if they don't change it up any, what will be the point?  Just another tribes 1 with better graphics.  Personally, I like the changes, and the additions..  I think T:V will be a pretty big hit when it releases to the public!

That's why tribes 2 was such a huge flop!! Because people really loved how simple tribes 1 was so what they really wanted was tribes 1 with super graphics :S not going to happen is it?
