T:V Open BETA
« on: September 4, 2004 03:21 pm CDT »
T:V Open beta was released last night or so. Head over to http://www.fileplanet.com and fill in a few personal info fields inculding UR Email addy, ZIp code, Ur Street addy and a few other things. They will give you a Beta Key befor you are prompted for a d/l..

But theres a small price to pay. The lines ARE HUGE and The actual tribes BETA is like 460MEG.

Ive been playing it for a few hours and I love it.. setting up my personal controls was a little odd but I got though it.

(and I read a week ago or so about someone posting about the start of the Open BETA sorry if this is OFN lol)

I liked it for a few days, but now it's annoying.  It seems just like Tribes 2 with a few weapons added.  Here are a few reasons why I don't like it:

I don't like how vehicles spawn on their own.. you can't buy them from stations.

Plasma range is way too short.

Gameplay is slow like T2.  I like tribes 1 because it is fast paced.  This is the main reason why I don't like T:V.

Lots of gameplay bugs that should NOT be there at this time..  they have undoubtedly tested the game extensively before releasing it as a beta..  I just hope it doesn't end up like T2.

Heavy Armor is too agile compared to the other armors..  heavies run too fast, and ski too well.  I can get from one base to another almost as quickly as light armors can, and that isn't a good thing.

No personal repair kits.  It makes dueling way too quick.  I like to have duels that last longer than 15 seconds..  I know that when you kill someone, they drop a health pack that replenishes you automatically, but I think it was a mistake getting rid of ones you can hold on you and use at will.  This is especially true for arena/duel servers.

The inventory system is wack.  You have to leave the server to edit your loadouts.  I do like, however, the way that it automatically changes your favorites [/not].  If you buy a certain loadout and change a weapon by entering the inventory station all the way like 5 times in a row, it automatically changes your loadout THAT YOU SET A CERTAIN WAY FOR A REASON.  If I change a loadout by 1 weapon a few times, it's probably because that weapon suits me better for the current situation, but that doesn't mean I want to change my favorite forever like that.

Mainly it's the gameplay, but those other little things are very annoying.

I got it friday night at 200kb/s from

http://http://www.5assedmonkey.com/Files/tribesv_mpbeta_en.exe

FilePlanet's line was 150+ people.

I think game play will get better in time.

Vehicles spawn the way they do for a reason. As it was before, someone could get a veihcle, go use it blow it up, repsawn and get anotehr, one afte the other endlessly the entire map. Tribes was never about vehicles, BUT they wanted vehicles to provide and advantage without the game becomming dependant on them [like t2]. This way, vehicles are powerful, provide an advantage, but you have to use them well and cant just waste them. I find this to be really well balanced. I dont imagine you would enjoy having someone non stop getting assult ships and bombing your base on winterlake.

Plasma always had a very limited range. The burner is no differnt, its range is even less, but i mean, the projectile goes so slow i dont see why you would need it to shoot far otehr than for spam.

Gameplay bugs...its beta what more can be said? Even still its less buggy now than T2 was at release.

Heavy armors were always fast, infact they could ski faster than lights in tribes 1. They are more agile and have more energy now, but, they are also alot weaker, 4 discs kill a heavy, headshot takes them to half, and they only have 3 weapon slots now aswell.

The repair kits, i really dont know what to say. Personaly i agree, i liked them and would like to see them added, but i dont consider them that big of a gameplay aspect really.

The inventory system is fine. You can change your loadouts and loadout names in game btw, just enter the inv normaly and you can change your loadouts and loadout names. If you want to adust your CURRENT LOADOUT, and not your favorites, picka  favorite then click on your current loadout and switch what you want, or just make more favorites [wich is alot easyer]. Entering the inv and using thier new system of fast favorites isnt all that bad, i hated it at first and now i think its good.

I feel heavies are perfect.  T1 heavies were WAAAAAY to f'ing slow and could barely move if they had to.  Skiing is too automated, but the gameplay in T:V seems much faster than T2 and a little quicker than T1.  I enjoy it.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

They could have easily put a limit on how many ships you can purchase in one map.  That way, you could use a vehicle when it would help your team the most, and not have to wait for one to spawn.  They basically made it really hard to apply any strategy when using vehicles.  You just have to get in one if you see it, and then hope it's a good time to use one.

It takes 4 DIRECT disc hits to kill a heavy..  and if you are skiing at blinding speeds, it isn't an easy thing to do.  I can ski straight into the enemy base on every map, and just rape all their stuff.  There isn't a way to defending against that unless you have your entire team on defense.. and even then, they all have to be excellent shots with the disc launcher or it won't even work.

I just think they made a worse version of tribes 1 with better graphics..  screw the graphics.  I just want gameplay..  I like quake and UT better than T:V purely because it's fast and you have to think on your toes.  T:V is just too slow compared to Tribes 1..  but I guess it will be hard to make a game that even compares.  I don't want another tribes 1, but I want a game that is at least as good as tribes 1..

That alone is excessive progress over T2. My review is at http://www.clanorb.com/ main page

Heavys were ALWAYS like this. I played HO competativly on OGL 10-10 CTF and TWL 10-10 CTF, so i would know. Iv been able to take rape the entire enemy base on DX within 25 seconds of the map starting, even on matchs i have done this.

If heavys wernt able to go fast, they would have NO offensive potential at all. Outside heavys are sitting ducks if they arnt going at least 100+mph. And really, its not that hard to stop them if they are, a MA or bb will send them off coarse very easily. 4 shots isnt much to kill the most heavily armored unit in the game. Perhaps you just need better aim, because i seriously dont see how that is a problem.

Defending the base itself is so easy its retarded. I dont even consider rape an issue, unless your raping below 5-5, thats just lame. HO cant hold base due to the invincable spawning players, a HO would be lucky to survive more than 4 spawns, after wich they can get thier base back up and running just as fast as it was destroyed.

If you want to stop HO i have one word for you...BUCKLER. Hell this weapon is good for everything. Learn to use it, and you will love it.

Heavies feel super light.  I love the Grappler.  It's pretty handy.  Another thing I really like is the "boost".  It helps gettin out of tight situations.  Ive been playing for about 2 hours already and I'm kicking everyones ass.

My system-Pentium4 1.8ghz, 128mb ram :-x, Radeon 7500(OC'ed to 400 mhz)
My frames are VERY smooth, but its at the lowest graphics settings.  Everything is still VERY detailed.  I love this game.  Some things i didnt like were the bugs(it IS a beta).  Like tones said, it doesnt save favs, and that sucks.
Well thats like the only bad thing about it. Everything else is pretty cool.

Changing from D3D to OpenGL:

change settings in tribesv_mpbeta_en

[Engine.Engine]
RenderDevice=D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice
;RenderDevice=Engine.NullRenderDevice
;RenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice

to this:

[Engine.Engine]
;RenderDevice=D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice
;RenderDevice=Engine.NullRenderDevice
RenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice

I haven't done it yet, but I'm curious if the OpenGL renderer is complete. And if it is, I'm curious if it runs better in OpenGL.

I'm slightly annoyed that UnrealEd isn't uncluded. I'll just decompile the uscript then.
