Wondering..
« on: September 5, 2004 10:24 pm CDT »
My mom just decided to buy me a new video card next weekend. I dont know which one to get...Will it be a waste if I get the newest video card with only a 1.3 ghz athlon?

How much would a better athlon / video card be?

I have an

1.3 ghz athlon and a
GeForce3 Ti200

-edit- And I dont want to have my mom to spend too much money, even though she said she didnt care how much it costs..

I dont want to get a new mobo or anything else.

Btw, I have an

epoX EP-8KTA2L mothermoard. I dont know if it will support any of the newer things..

just dont make the mistake i did and buy a cheapo low end gforce4 assuming that geforce4's start where geforce3's ended. I was sorely mistaken.

I would suggest an ati card, as they have proven to significantly outperform nvidias lately, despite my great experiences with nvidia in the past.

When you get something for free its far too easy to be too lazy to not bother doing any research. If i got a new car for free, i'd probably jump right in and drive it before i started comparing the differences between my old one..

When it comes time to actually buy a video card, i will be doing my research. I kinda dropped out of wanting to know the market value, specs, and performance comparisons for everythign hardware, Its like keeping up with car stats if you are never going to buy one.

Oh well, made a mistake, lost a whole lotta nothing.

I would rather have an X800xtpe.  For every modern game but doom 3, it'd have a slight edge.

Seeing as how Doom 3 plays just fine on a Radeon 9700 even with 4x AA, I don't think I'd be bothered by the fps drop associated with the ATI.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

You can get a Radeon 9800 Pro for like $150 now..  it's 128, but it will suit you fine for quite a while.  If you want to spend $50 more, you can get the 256meg version of the 9800 Pro as well.

You're just talking about the Geforce4 MX...

Since you have rather low system specs, a 9600Pro or XT would probably be the best you can do.

He wont get any higher fps with a 9800Pro because of his low specs.

The 256mb version of the 9800Pro has no significant performance increases over the 128mb version.  Dont be fooled.

Indeed.  It has actually been shown that an average of 10 FPS are lost with the 256 over the 128... of course that was last year... so who knows what's up these days.  AS Darwin said; Don't be fooled.
