Bah, mouse is broken, tried connecting another mouse but it doesn't work either? any ideas? i'm thinking maybe internal connection problem?


tis annoting having to do everything on the keyboard =P

reboot.....mice are not hot-swapable...meaning if you unplug one while your computer is on, it may not pick it up.  try that and see if it works.

In Windows XP, ps2 mice are hot swappable. They are also hot swappable in anything back to 98se if it is updated and it is a usb mouse.

Tell me your OS, and what kind of mouse it is (usb/ps2)

If it is PS2, and you are using Windows XP, after windows boots, take out your keyboard and plug your mouse into your keyboard port. Your keyboard would also have to be ps2 and not ps1 or usb.

If it is usb, try another usb port.


If you find it to work in your keyboard port if it is ps2, then you need to buy a new motherboard unless you are some soldering genius.

If it is usb and all usb ports are bad, same thing except you can try a ps2 mouse. It isn't as fast, but it does the job.

A bit off topic but..For some reason when I plug in my mouse to my USB and I plug in some other USB thing to my other USB slot, the 2nd USB slot doesnt work. The computer doesnt detect the second USB slot...

Check your usb drivers for those ports. If anything, see if you can get the lasters drivers for your motherboard. If that fails, then uninstall and reinstall all your usb drivers.

If the usb ports are not directly attached to the motherboard (front usb) they might not be connected properly.

also as another tip, alot of times if you happen to have a setup with like 10 usb slots, not all of them may be enabled. I found this out once while messing around with my bios, found that my front panel, and my 2 extra usb slots were disabled.

But yeah, mice are hot swappable, but windows has been known to freak out about them, even if you're running a good version.

Also a great rule of thumb as ozzy mentioned, when soemthing isnt working, when it probably should be working, update everything.

hmmm, well, i tried swapping the mouse and keyboard slots but neither work at that point. and as it turns out our dell only has the two spots for keyboard and mouse shapes. keyboard worked in the keyboard slot but when i switched them enither worked.

i have no idea whats wrong. it was acting up for a week or so then just stopped working all together. Its just a regular old rolling ball mouse, lol. it just doesn't seem to connect suddenly. was just about to do a system clear after i burned all important stuff (was about 85% done all my burning when it broke) too painful to finish burning it all.

oh and i'm runnin XP, found it a pain to look at stuff in the setup folder.

In the control panel, on the side bar you can click "Switch to Classic View". You will probably be more used to that setup.

Do you have a different mouse you could try? Borrow one, or get a cheap one from the store? It may just be defective hardware.

Isn't Dell's big advertisment, #1 in customer support?

Dell's customer support is known for its phone technical support. The phone technical support isn't even dell anyway, it is outsourced to other companies.

To get a hardware replacement, the tech you speak to on the phone will have to think that piece of hardware is b0rked. Then he sends a ticket to Dell, and if Dell decides it is B0rked, then they send it out. If Dell doesn't, then it just gets ignored.

It all depends on the tech's documentation. They are not the final say on what gets shipped out.

I'm sure that is more than what you needed to know, but this is my lecture for the day.

haha yeah the screen broke once already too. spent an hour on the phone with customer service. first thing i told the guy was that it was making a clicking sound and it seems to have burnt out or have a circuit problem. so we spent an hour on the phone with him asking me to turn the screen on and off again, try restarting teh computer, is the screen plugged in properly, etc etc. finally he said ok well it sounds like your screen is broken. ended up with a new screen less than 48 hours later. figured id try asking ppl about the mouse before i called them up again.

and yes hersch i tried another mouse but it wouldn't connect either.

Get yourself a $10 optical mouse replacement.  Its basicly the same as what dell sends you anyway.

Or spring $50 for a Logitech MX510.  It was well worth it (accuracy up to 40in/sec.)  No more twitching in a game and ending up looking at the floor!

blah it was the motherboard, found an empty usb port to add a new mouse. so its working again, just can't get the ps/2 mouses....or is it mice?
