I Bought HL2 Today
« on: November 16, 2004 09:10 pm CST »
Turns out it need 4.5GB to install...I don't have it.

I've got 9 hard drives and not 4.5GB.  I'm pathetic.

Good news though:  It comes on 5 CDs but I can edit it to run off of a DVD.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

That's the base install.  Games have a tendency to get large around me.

Prime examples:
- Quake 1:  1996, came on 16 floppies--Quake 1 folder now:  1.00GB
- Half-Life:  1998(or around), came on one CD--4.21GB @ end of CS 1.5

-Editing for Nesso-
I've got a $400 hardware RAID controller in my machine.  It has eight ports on it, so my machine can handle 12 hard drives total.

Hmm... Pop an other PCI HD controller card in there and slap in a couple of those 250 GB drives for backup space... maybe on RAID, then use one of the faster sets of HD's for the games.

2 motherborads a go (before I rmaed for cheaper options) my motherboard came with 4 SATA Channels, 4 IDE 100 and 4 IDE 133, as well as 2 floppy drive channels.  (that is 4 sata ports on board, 2 ide 100 ports on board, ad 2 ide 133 ports on board.)

Of course... power consumption may be higher that way, so I opted for a cheaper more power efficient board for a while... and now I have:
DFI Lan Party NFII Ultra B
Got it for the hardware specs, not the name or the glow in the dark bullcrap or the overclocking options (limited.)
-4 sata channels
-2 ide 133 channels
-2 ide 100 channels
-2 floppy drive channels.
-gigabit lan port
-10/100 lan port
-400 FSB support
-3200 ram support @ dual channel
etc...

Not bad, but still not PCI-Express... which I sort of regret!

You won't find PCI-E on a Socket A motherboard and never will.

Anyway, to "slap in a couple of those 250 GB drives" takes precious money that I don't currently have.  If I had it my way, I'd replace all those 120's I've got with 250's or 300's.

A 120Maxtor and a 160Seagate.
The Segate is partioned between Windows and whatever other programs I have.

The Seagate is my back up, which is about 60Gigs of Files. So, needless to say it will be a while before I get interested in Harddrives again.
