Revitilization Needed
« on: May 31, 2005 03:17 pm CDT »
Any ideas on what we can do to revitalize the forum?  I hate to admit it, but we've seen better days.  We don't have the heavy posters like Darwin like we used to and most other people just aren't chatty anymore.  We used to have almost a page of topics added to everyday, but we have just moved to posting again and again in a few select topics that reach 5, 10, or more pages.

Any ideas on what could help?  This should be a fun environment for the people on the forum or anybody TRPG related in general.  Let's return it to that way.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

Hey I just seen your name on the index page. I was not in the server or on the forums for a couple months now because of school, and I just came back, so I think a few others will be able to post more because of not being in school.

I don't have any ideas, but what if people in the server started posting here on the forum? I always wondered why all those people in the game didn't post here. Most of them say they are scared of being made fun of if they post here. If something could "bring" them from the game to the forum, there would be a little bit more activity. But summer is coming, and people will have more time on the computer I guess. Once people get out of school, we'll probably see a lot of posts.

Otherwise, you could just make small contests here, like answer a few questions (once a week) with 5000 experience to the winner, the point being to make people look at the forum, and make them register their name here, making it easier for them to post in other topics.

I bet everyone else will have better ideas. Good luck :)

You know, that's a really good idea.  I think I will.  With all of the real assholes gone, I might even repeal the no-freemail registration condition.

Unbanning my ip might be a good idea, proxies are a tad annoying. :P

Depends on how much you want to mod your forum Particle, you could setup a rpg on  here. I'm sure theres a few places to download the code. Although from what i've heard/read the code isn't that great, you have to install a bunch of seperate mods and what not.

That might not give people a reason to join, but it will add something so we might visit a lil more often.

I've never tried one, I want to see what it's like. I have absolutely no idea how it works.

*shrug*

Actually, I think it's exactly the opposite. As students leave school and begin Summer Vacation, I'd noticed that the number of posts in many forums have dropped significantly. During the summer, many people would rather be outside enjoying the freedom than inside on a forum.

The contest idea sound fun, though!

That was going to be set up on PUB (http://www.rytek.info/pub/) but it was decided that installing 8 different mods wasn't worth it. Probably the same case that Artorius was talking about  :P

I thought it sounded fun...but then I'm not the one who has to install it.

yeah i think getting all the kids that play on the server to come to the forums would increase traffic a ton. but also taking away the no free email would work as well.

I only put in that requirement because shorty/celtic/misc were creating new accounts every time I'd ban them.  They seem to all be gone for now though.

Both excelent points.

Maybe put a news function back into the game with a one in ten chance of showing the website URL, you would be amazed at how many noobs download the mod from your site, play your server, then ask what your url is for the forums because they forgot.  It wouldn't be too intrusive and it would still provide the information they want.

As for the contest, work with Taurik... I'm sure he would build something in to GhettoBot to distribute prizes won on the forums to the characters in-game.

I wish you would. Then I could finally edit my freaking profile/signature. :x

Anyway, the forum's geting stale because PCRPG is getting stale. It's pretty easy to see the connection, since everyone's been clamoring for updates since "PCRPG 4" was supposed to be released. Forums thrive on change, and in order to breathe life back into this place, you'll have to makes some gameplay changes, and you'll have to make this a "forum" (no pun intended) to discuss said changes. Go out on a limb; make a change you believe will be destined to fail. If it does, change it back. I can guarantee a stampede of people if they believe they can have a say in the workings of the server.

I haven't made any real non-security updates in a long time.  It's true.  In fact, historically, most of my updates have been to patch security issues.  The real problem is the item system.  A game where you can exhaust all the different items gets very boring.  There's also a total lack of ambience (sound, animation, visuals) which can make non-movement extremely static.

My mod is still around...  I've got a lot of bugs to work out of my code, and you know how I like to ask for your said security patches.  DeathAdder said he might be interested in helping me out also.   -$$-Freak might be willing to come back (he and I started it originally) if he knows it will be used.  Then of course you can't be too bad at code yourself with all the holes you have plugged.

I can't seem to edit my posts.  :?

I could make a list of what I've got done, what is in progress, what is planned if you like.

Set up the server as a more open source project, still your name attached to it, etc.  There is some real talent on the server that gets wasted on stuff like mining material counters and junk like that, instead of enriching and re-freshing gameplay.
