So what the hell is Tribes anyway?
« on: June 25, 2005 11:53 am CDT »
So I decided to reinstall T:V yesterday, and I was amazed to find less than 40 people playing multiplayer.

The multiplayer wasn't that great when I had first played it, but I was hoping there would have been a mod out by now that would make it pretty good.

Am I missing something, or is there really so few people playing a game not even a year old?

So I decided to pop in here because I knew these forums were still up and say hi.

Me.. I'm still going to college, and working.. Landed my first "real" programming job recently as a consultant for a local electronics company. It isn't the greatest, but it is a start.

I still play WoW. Though It is starting to get a little boring.. Raiding MC several times a week starts to get old. At least we are past Baron..

So how has it been? Who is still around? What have I missed?

No one modded T:V because there was no real modder support for it. THey set up they had made it more difficult to mod, and many modders didn't want to be bothered with it. Plus, the patch that was promised was never released and all support for the game was completely dropped.

Play Tribes vengeance Mod on Tribes! It's much better.

Well, just got back from being out of town for 5 days.  I'm playing Dark Age of Camelot apparently.  I guess I bought it accidentally.  Looks like the main annoyance of the Tribes RPG community is back (for whatever reason I can't tell you).  The server celebrated its fourth birthday a while ago.  We had a free giveaway of a dollar.  The forums got sick and then sprang back.  That's about all that's happened.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

To give you an idea: the VU dev team recently posted some figures.  I think after T1 and T2 went public for free, their total sales/downloads were 350k for T1 and 400k for T2 all time.  T:V to date might have 40k copies.  Thus, they dropped the patch they were planning for the game, the developers hated the UT engine because of how difficult it was, and they needed some of the functions promised in the patch.  Plasmatic (pretty much all of annihilation since 1.31) had planned an annihilation mod for T:V then dropped it because he was so frustrated with the way VU had handled things.  The VU dev team also said that as of right now, the Tribes name would never be given to another game... That's what Sierra gets for shutting down the Dynamix branch and licensing off the name to second rate coders.

Oh, almost all client side scripting was removed except for a glitch that gave anyone and their graindmother perfect shots with chain-gun turrets and sniper rifles... bucklers also.

Oh, and why the hell would you WoW?  Guild Wars for life biotches!

I'm still here, UG. I still hate muggers so nothing there has changed....Particle gave out a dollar, and Construction mod for Tribes 2 has passed its glory days, but its still very fun. TPC for life!

I actually played GW when it still had its monthly beta's before December. I just couldn't play a game like that where you couldn't jump, and were very restricted by terrain.

I worked with the code a bit a while back.. It was a pain in the ass. So they completely took out client side scripting? That was one of the main things that made Tribes so good.

Nice to see you get latched into a pay-to-play Part =)

How many people still play Tribes? I don't know if I could handle installing it again.

Oh, and Hi Koro.

What actually happened was that I accidentally bought a month of subscription during the trial (thought you were forced into doing so) and forgot to cancel before the 14th day.  Needless to say, my credit card has a $14.95 on it and I've got another three weeks of a game I haven't started playing yet (got stuck on a quest at level 2).

I absolutely loved the T:V demo.  I was on the verge of buying it, and then I found out VU completely abandoned it.

Just because it didnt sell doesnt make it a bad game.  VU should re-think the way they make/market games.

Hey, UG. Do you still play Alliance on Sargeras? What guild are you in? I'm in The Mighty Oxen Horde side, working on my Mage (42) after getting my Rogue to 60.

By the way, what's your name in game?
