It should remain that way from now on.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

How relevant your sig is to my current situation, Particle.  I am asked how linux is better than windows all the time (been running Ubuntu 5.10 for three weeks now).  I never really have a straight answer.  So they ask how it is different, and I tell them it really isnt much harder than windows to use, it is just a different environment that takes a couple weeks to become adjusted to.  Same would go for an OSX user switching to Windows, or vice versa.

I would say my latest experience has been very very nice.  Using my desktop now instead of my laptop.  Unfortunately, I have been at a loss at trying to get my 9800XT to work with direct rendering.  Drivers installed and everything, and run every configuration under the sun.  *sigh*  Perhaps I should ask if my roommate would like to try my 9800XT while I use his FX5500 *shiver*.

Double post:

I felt bad for even saying such things about linux, so I gave direct rendering one more try.  Again, went to an Ubuntu guide for installing the drivers properly, and realized I had missed a few key things.  Paid attention to every detail (really it was only like 7 small steps, nothing huge or overly technical about it).

Let me say this, I am THOUROUGHLY impressed!  Ran UT2004 Demo natively at 1280x1024, and I bet I could go even higher.  I'm installing Doom III next.

Unfortunately, the latest fglrx drivers have broken my HW 3D in linux.  I upgraded from last year's last release...and it broke.

What is your current distro setup?

I haven't had the time to properly launch it.  It'll stay down until I do.  I still have the domain registered, though.

I've uninstalled fglrx, the restricted modules, and everything...but when I install the driver again it doesn't work right.

Currently, I use Ubuntu 5.10 like you do.  I opted for the i686 version instead of the AMD64 one due to (ironically) 3D issues with the fglrx driver.

Here was my installation guide.  I followed Method 2 (for the newer 8.20.x drivers that are downloaded from ati.com)

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu ... tion_Guide

Follow it to the letter, and hopefully you will have great success.

That looks pretty much like what I did.  No dice.  It worked with the December drives, but no joy for the new ones.
