Episode two is out.  Here's a copy of the news article:

Quote
Today I recorded the second episode of This Period in PCRPG, covering topics that have come up in this last week. Since Episode 1 officially covers until the end of today, Epsiode 2 is technically a supplement to the previous installment. In this episode, I cover three big topics from this last week including the lag problem and tent restrictions. If you're interested, give it a download:

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

You've been restored.  You last played on August 30, 2005.

A character file is between 3-5KB.

So getting rid of 4700 character files freed up about 18.8mb of space...
And would that 18.8mb really affect the server so much as to make it lag? You said so yourself that the host machine was a beast, so...=\

Any server machine running tribes nowadays can easily run it. It's probably not about the host machine, but about the aging game itself and that game trying to handle the sheer number of files.

Now that's what I call a theory........What if particle moved to a Tribes 2 server? Granted almost no one seems to have Tribes 2 and considering the gameplay...well...sucked horribly....I dunno. What was the other game he hosts in? UT2K4?

It isn't the space that's important.  It's the number of files in the Temp folder.  Lots of files in a directory causing delays isn't a theory, it's a fact.  That's why I clear it out.  It's really not for discussion.  I was just explaining it so users who come to find their character missing will know why and what they can do about it.
