New solution
« on: March 8, 2006 10:12 pm CST »
Okay so I just got my new 250GB Sata HDD. Windows only recognizes 147GB of it. I need SP2 so Windows can recognize the whole 250GB. The windows update keeps installing the same update over and over and over: some BITS update thats required to get the rest of the updates. It won't move on. After it's done installing BITS, it restarts, and then says I need to update BITS again.

wtf? help! plz

What, do you use FAT32 or something?  I've run Windows XP (SP nothing) and had no problems using my 600GB RAID-5 array...years ago.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

Only other common problem is with controllers/drivers themselves.

Well, older controllers had problems with >127GB.  I know XP (SP nothing) can deal with hundreds of GB on a volume...so yeah, it seems like a controller issue.

Stolen from http://www.wdc.com

Problem:
The full capacity of EIDE drives larger than 137GB (128GB binary) is not recognized in Windows 2000/XP.

Cause:
The Windows Operating System, Motherboard BIOS, or PCI IDE controller BIOS does not currently support 48-bit LBA (Logical Block Addressing).

Resolution:
48-bit LBA support is necessary for drives larger than 137GB (128GB binary). The following conditions are necessary for the correct functioning of 48-bit LBA support in Windows 2000/XP:

How can I check if my MB supports 48-bit LBA?

You've already proven that it doesn't.  I wasn't joking.  I've had a 600GB volume that worked just fine with XP Gold (no SP).

Look for a firmware upgrade.

ahahhaah my brother totally came in and fixed it. I can't believe i didnt think of this, it was so simple.

My Computer (Right click) --> Manage
Go to Disk Management. The hard drive was listed as having 112GB unpartitioned, and the other 127GB was partitioned. All I did was delete the partitioned space so that it was ALL unpartitioned space, then just reformatted the whole thing.

Geeze.  I assumed you were above that level.  If it was anything but 127GB, I might have mentioned that...but that's a common non-48bit LBA controller cutoff.

BITS = Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

It is required to get new windows updates.

Sounds like your windows update is hozed.. on top of your motherboard not supporting your hard drive size.

Your cheapest solution may be to get a PCI hard drive controller card which supports your larger drive.

Peace.

*edit*
haha... I just read the last 2 posts.  Turns out.. I remember reading this yesterday and forgot to respond until today.. but it has been solved allready.
