Upcoming Changes

The forums (and possibly tim.xfury.net) will be moved to a different host. This will allow me to hopefully have a faster site and more media-rich content. This doesn't mean I am going to flood my home page with banners and flash animations. This simply means that if I want to put a picture in the news, now I can without worri'n 'bout 'dat.

With this may come new forums. I think I am finally moving away from YaBB, however well it may have treated us this far. I am looking at a couple other forums that are bases in PHP instead of Perl. This is not a definate. Even if so, there will be no change in this forum's content. All users, posts, threads, profiles, etc will be preserved.

I look for this to happen within a week's time. At first, there may be a redirection page until the DNS servers are updated. There may be a day or two of downtime when this occurs. It could be as little (however) as a couple hours.

Alright, I purchased the hosting package tonight.  The new server should be operational within a few days.  Until then, the current host will remain as it is :)

Bahh, after looking at it for awhile, I dont think it could increase the dependency of the webserver.  Looks like it would require big-business quality hardware (racked servers, the works).  nvm.

Is freebsd a good OS to host stuff like forums on?  Since less than 1% of USA population even knows about it, im sure its pretty safe against viruses and crackers.

If you are looking into php based forums I visit several forums regularly that are based off of phpBB, and it seems to be a very nice system.  Lucid's forums for his normal Tribes clan is now in phpBB, he finally got off the EZBoard after like 2 years of EZgold.  It seems to be very customizable and I know a couple people who'd be willing to tell you all about their experiences with it (three very different types of forums that all use phpBB).

Hehe, there's also the ability to do attachments and polls now.  phpBB didn't work out for me, so YaBB SE 1.5 looks like it's going to be the official forum for now.  It's pretty slick, actually.

Try to find a way to stream video like the old forums did.  I dont mean stream like from your computer, but like have the ability to put in a quicktime or wmp box and set the url to download.
