For all of those who are sick of Planetside and WoW and dont like the graphics on Tribes, but you dont want to run away from a good FPS, then check this out

Huxley is a massively multiplayer online first-person shooting game (MMOFPS) developed by the H-Studio of global online entertainment company, WEBZEN Inc. Huxley takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where human beings have mutated and are divided into two opposing races, Sapiens and Alternative. At the center of the battle for survival is Lunarites, a promising new energy source that both sides seek to obtain. Forced to battle against one another for the continuance of each race, Sapiens and Alternatives are willing to do whatever it takes to wipe out the conflicting race and gain control of the world and its resources.

When are game developers going to turn their forking brains on and call them SPECIES, not races.  GOD DAMNIT.

If the organisms in question are still able to breed, then they are seperate CULTURES, ETHNICITIES or CIVILZATIONS, not races.

forkERS.

ARGH!

(apology for swaring... this topic has just been eating at me lately.)

yeah, both kinda human. But you cant say black and white arent 2 different races. Those Alternative guys dont look white to me. So they must have a race.

Yeah.  Some gaming mag I'm subscribed to had an article about it last year and it looked worth getting once it is released.  It breaks a few molds:
1)  MMO with graphics that don't look like decade-ago trash
2)  The amount of player drive is interestingly cool
3)  An FPS-ish MMO that doesn't feel like crap to play

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

You could call one of them blah and the other one bler..  wouldn't bother me as long as the game is as fun as it appears to be.

Race would work in this instance. Since the only thing really seperating the two..factions..is their mutations (which are assumingly transmitted genetically to their children), the species would still be classified as human and from there you'd subdivide into races/breeds/varieties. The race would be a genetically and geographically distinct subspecies. Considering the two factions are at war, they've naturally isolated eachother geographically from the other.
Race is a pretty general term, though. Different populations based on skin pigments can be classified as different races, yet we can all interbreed. In other uses the word refers to all of humanity. Because of diversification, interbreeding, etc, the genetic and geographic differences between various populations have become less obvious so classifying different races of humans really isn't very effective anymore.

It sort of reminds me of PlanetSide. Had such great potential, but horrible execution in the end. Maybe it'll work out. Only problem is, with great MMOs comes great lag. You can play an RPG in lag and still play resonably well, but FPSes just become unplayable.

IIRC, each server will be capped around 10,000 players.

try speaking to a sociologist to get a clear definition of race

According the sociologists I know... "race" is an outdated term and is now meaningless.

Instead of racism, it is now called "ethnocentrism" (if I remember last spring correctly.)

Anyway... my beef is over the simple fact that they're not races; they're Factions.  (a side from the alleged "Pollitical Correct" concearns of the term "race" [not being used any more in sociology, that is] it is only applied to humans as in history of earth.)

If the mutants and the non-mutants are two seperate groups, then they are Factions or Cultures, but not races.

It's bothering me because it's poor english and using outdated terminology to improperly descibe something, just like tribes said "watch where your shooting" which is not correct either... it would be "watch where you're shooting" to be correct.

I am not a member of the alleged "white race."  There is not an alleged "Black race" as so many ethnocentrists may have you think.  If some one calls me white I tell them my name and they I am not a color.  No one is a color.  (if some one wants to refer to themself as such a term, then it is their business.  From my experience... I don't know a single person of african descent who would not want to be called "black" and I have been told by said people that they prefer that.  I can accept it.. but I certainly don't call them "african-americans" because they are born here just like the rest of us.  We don't call "white" people "european-americans" unless they were born in europe.)

I am 24 years old and I have known this crap since I was in 6th grade... 1991?  A long time... years before this modern era of game industry was anywhere near where it is now.

It would be sensible and refined to have the language in modern and futuristic games reflect proper term usage.

I guess it boils down to just feeling like for "cutting edge"  they certainly are behind-the-times in terminology.  I'd rather it all be up to date.

*edit to address Kyrie's note*
Breed would be an acceptable term (when looking at other species;  chickens for example) because the species can reproduce completely accross the board with one an other, but each group is of a different specific breed of human.

You don't call different breeds of chickens a different "race."  I don't see how you could apply a classification not used in any taxonomy to humans, such as race.

From the looks of the descriptions I have read for the game, these people are of different factions which are in isolated geographic areas.  These would be different Culture groups or different Ethnic groups, but certainly not anything to do with this term "race."

Peace.

I just found out that the music in Huxley will be done by Kevin Riepl, same guy who did City of Villians and Unreal Tournament 2004
