[Futility] Operating System Survey
« on: June 23, 2006 09:58 pm CDT »
I'd like to take a quick poll of what operating system you like to run and what platform you run it with.  This isn't important really, so a reply isn't necessary if you don't want to explain your position.  I would like everybody who votes to reply with which option you picked at least, though.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

Redhat based?  You mean using an rpm-based distro?

And you left off the 'compile from source' based distros such as gentoo.  And the always up and coming SkyOS (which I am still yet to use).  And also there is the BSD's.

Ubuntu 6.06 (debian based distro).  Today, after reading a news release about the upcoming Ubuntu 'Edgy Eft' distro, perhaps I will move to that when it is released.  Expect a disgruntled yet happy Darwin.

I said what I meant.  Your complaint isn't valid and is irrelevant.

I had another option for "Other:  Detail your OS and platform below in a post" but it evaporated.  So no--I didn't forget to cover that.  I will, however, attempt to repair the poll to how it was supposed to be.

cant select 2, i like them both equally. When the boot menu pops it it usually sits there for a few before i decide. (of course i mean AMD/Intel XP and AMD/Intel Ubuntu) I use everything equally.

I don't see how, unless your heatsink & fan weren't installed correctly or were inadequate.  I've had a 1.2GHz Thunderbird, three Athlon XPs (1600+, 1900+, 2500+), an Athlon XP Mobile 2600+, and currently an Athlon 64 3000+.  More than that, they've all been overclocked as far as they'll go.  Once, I experimented with a K6-II and K6-III using super cooling techniques.  I can't honestly tell you that I've ever had a heat problem with any of them.

That's one of the trade-offs for going to a 64-bit operating system.  Regardless of if you go with Linux or Windows, not everything is going to work.  The main difference though, is that Windows's 64-bit port is a mixed environment by default--it will run both 32-bit and 64-bit software simultaneously.  That doesn't mean that everything works right, though.  Most 64-bit Linux distros aren't a true mixed environment by default (yet).  Almost everything in the system is a 64-bit port with rather limited 32-bit compatibility.  There are some advantages to this in terms of speed and uniformity, but there are also some disadvantages.  The w32codecs package won't work.  Neither will Flash unless you install a 32-bit version of Firefox and trick it into installing.
