Hosting a TRPG Server.
« on: June 27, 2006 12:53 pm CDT »
I've been trying to host a TRPG server to work on my scripting and map making and have been having some trouble getting the server up and running.

I go into my RPG folder and double click on the rpgserv icon that kind of looks like a flag. I fill out all the information and click "Launch Server".

The black command screen pops up and loads everything. When I scroll up on the command screen I see an error.

It says.. ERROR: Couldn't find world 'rpgmap5_worldsave_.cs'

I don't know if this error is not letting me host my server but I think it might have something to do with it.

I have no idea what it means so I tried looking it up on the net and didn't get anything. Now I've decided to ask the people on this forum if they have any idea why I cannot get the server running.

Any information will be greatly appriciated.

Shouldn't really matter from what I recall because you haven't hosted before so there hasn't been a world save.  When the console came up did it keep crashing or you just can't see it?  I know this might not sound logical but sometimes if you host a dedicated server and one IP from your ISP is currently(ie you recently got a new IP) and the other IP not currently(Your IP hasn't refreshed in a long time) it can prevent you from seeing your own server(btw does anyone know why that happens?) so maybe that is your problem.

Another thing to check is your preferences, like whether you have the host public enabled/disabled.

Oh quick little pointer that I wish I remembered when I started up my server.  Make sure you rename the script.vol in the Tribes\base folder to script.bak because it will override some of the cs files in the RPG folder.  If you do change the name of the script.vol to revert the effects just rename it back.

This information was tested while doing the RPG map 5.

I tried it with the RPG map 4 and it was basically the same thing.

ERROR: Couldn't find world 'rpgmap4_worldsave_.cs'

It must have something to do with a world save script or something I don't quite know and have been trying to look it up on the internet, still nothing yet.

When the black command screen came up I can see everything and it loads up. But when I check to see if the server is there I can't find it.

I figured something was wrong so I scrolled up and found the error.

Also I check under preferences and found that I DID have the "Check to make this server visible to the public" checked off.

Also you mentioned to make sure I rename the script.vol in the Tribes\base folder to script.bak so I looked in my base folder and found a file named scripts with an S idk if that matters but was wondering if that is indeed the folder i rename to script.bak OR scripts.bak with an S.

After just posting my last message I tried to run Tribes and for some reason the screen is completely black and nothing is happening when ordinarily tribes would start running..

Is this because i changed the files in the base mod?

Changed it back to the original and Tribes works fine now. Why was I suppose to change the names in the first place?

When your the actual hoster of a dedicated mod you need to make sure the script.vol is changed but don't change it for the one you play with.  The reason why I said to change it is because sometimes Tribes evaluates the script.vol in the base folder last which if your hosting is a bad thing because it evaluates other scripts like comchat.cs which is inside that file.  So if you don't change it when your actually hosting your server you might end up with problems of scripts not working or your server constantly restarting.  But remember if you want to actually play in tribes you shouldn't change it.

As for you still not being able to see your server.  Are you using the same computer to see if your computer is hosting or do you have a seperate computer hosting?

I'll assume you are hosting for solely development reasons and try to help.

Create an rpgserv.cs with the included program in your RPG folder.  It's the one with the red Canadian flag icon.

Then, launch tribes like this:
Tribes.exe -mod RPG +exec rpgserv.cs -host rpgmap5

This should launch Tribes and connect you to a listen server (your computer while you are playing) hosting rpgmap5.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

I'll be releasing a secure updated rpgserver probably within the next month.  I just have to get the original files so that I dont give out my custom content. Ill post here when it's done.
