More FTP Server Help!
« on: July 7, 2006 02:24 pm CDT »
Hi everyone, it's time for the same old server, but with new problems.

We were able to get everything to work, including remote access. Unfortunately, now, we are unable to manipulate files within the folder from an outside user. For example: We can create folders and subfolders, and we can add files, but we cannot move files between folders that are on the FTP server.

I know this has something to do w/ permissions, and I've gone in and out, and even found multiple sections regaring Read/Write access, but even after setting those permissions, we are still unable to fix it. Would anyone happen to know if there's anything more we need to do?

Thanks!

It's naptime villman. Big people are talking now.

Anyway, we essentially can put stuff in, take stuff out, but we can't move stuff around when they're in there.

Are you trying to sort of drag and drop via an FTP client or from the server itself?

Client. We can change and manipulate stuff as we please while we're on the server itself. It's when we're accessing the FTP server from a remote client that we can't drag and drop or copy/paste stuff.

And once again, to clarify: we can remotely add/remove files and create/delete folders and subfolders, but we cannot remotely move those files into the folders that are on the FTP server. It's like we have full access permission...but not.

Also, the users that have access to the FTP server have been given administrator permissions, if that makes anything.

*New* When remotely accessing the FTP server, if you try to right click and go to properties of a folder that you created, it says "This server does not support changing file permissions." This is ridiculous.

As far as I know, FTP clients aren't built that way.  In order to swap files around, you would have to download them to a folder on the remote system, then upload them to a different folder.

If you're just swapping files from folder to folder, why not VNC into it and do it graphically, as if you were at the server itself?

VNC is a program that allows you to see/control the desktop of a remote computer (i.e., I can access my home computer from work, and actually see my own home desktop)  You can also transfer files, like an FTP client with it.  You would have to open 2 additional ports on your router(usually 5800 and 5900, but you can change them to suit your needs), similar to how you opened ports for the FTP server.  You can access a remote computer either using the VNC client or via a webpage where java is enabled.

Go here to check out the program.  http://http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/  It's also FREEWARE!

And once again go here (http://http://www.portforward.com)to learn how to do the port forwarding for your specific router using VNC.  From the top menu select Forwarding, then select your specific router from the list, then select UltraVNC.  You'll get specific instructions.

I also use VNC to access headless sytems (no monitor, keybd, mouse connected).

You can also do this with RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) in Windows XP/2000. (clients available for 95/98X) similarly, but I haven't fooled with that much.

That might work. It's just...weird. At my house, we have a similar setup (dedicated server, remote clients, etc) and using SSH SecureShell, we are able to access the server and create folders and move stuff around like it was no problem. =\ I'll give it a shot, i guess, but why wouldn't an FTP server allow for file moving?

Not sure...

an FTP server does allow for file moving, perhaps it's your FTP client that is at fault.  What are the specific programs you're using (server/client)?

We're just using the Windows FTP protocol. No specific program, just windows explorer. From there it prompts you to enter your username/password, and that's that. The client is Win Xp and the server is SBS 2003

Regarding the VNC program, we downloaded it and got it to work. I can remotely access the desktop and move things around. However, I noticed that one of the buttons at the top of the VNC program is File Transfer. When I clicked it, a window opened up and looked exactly like a File Transfer window, but then it came up with the same error:

WARNING: File Transfer is disabled on the Remote Machine.

That message appeared in the box that the location would normally appear. So it's the same error we got when we tried to go to the properties of one of the folders.

Do you know how to 'enable' File Transfer on the server by chance?

Well, right now we have to use the windows FTP to transfer files, and then use the VNC program to move files around. I just want a way to do it all with one window, and the VNC WOULD work, but for some reason it keeps telling me that File Transfer is not enabled. AUGH

Thanks though..

Well I managed to get the File Transfer for VNC working by restarting the computers....but Its not a browser kind of FTP. I just want to have them be able to click and drag files back and forth...like an FTP with a GUI or something, I dont know.

Well I'm home right now. We got VNC to work, but its a complicated process:
To click/drag files to server, they have to open up the windows explorer shortcut that i set up, drag all their files into the ftp folder, then open up VNC and use the remote desktop function to organze the files from there. Why can't it all be done in just 1 program?   *Emo tears*
