I bought a newer revision of my older Gigabyte motherboard, thinking it had gone on the blink (but then found the issue to be my PS).  Lovely motherboard, that Gigabyte motherboard is.  But unfortunately, the heatsink that came with it is a very tiny passive sink (compared with the older revision), and heats up quite a bit.  Will be finding a copper replacement shortly, or perhaps add it to the water cooling loop.

It isn't the same motherboard I linked to is it?  That thing looked like it had a ginormous heatsink.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

Not really. I could probably find something myself that's an aluminum ATX.
On the PSU, I'll go with your recommendation. No problem.
Sound Card? Turtle Beach is fine. If you think I shouldn't have problems with the Montego, I'll take it.
Motherboard ok.
I'll be considering monitor size. Probably go with the 19" to save money. Despite having more to work with than I thought, I don't have access to my financial aid money yet.
I may just buy the essentials "now" and get the others a bit later, after move-in. Or rather be at the dorm when they're delivered.

Really need to start saving for a vehicle. And I'm using loan money, too. My spending won't be as haphazard this time... maybe.

<edit>
Why do I always forget something?
Anyway, what do I need in order to hook my game consoles up to the monitor? I'd like to be TV-free this time. Maybe I won't have to use my loft (I'm not looking forward to setting it up, anyway).

I think I've got a spare TV tuner you can use to see if you like using your computer for TV (and it doesn't have too much delay) before you actually go and buy anything.

Is that what I used with my GameCube the first several days last year? I remember the delay being noticeable. Not sure how good that would be for console games that call for quick reflexes.

No.  That was the AIW part of my Radeon 9700, which is a Theater 200 based tuner.  I've got a Theater 550 Pro tuner now and the spare is a Pinnacle PCTV.  You're welcome to test both the 550 and the PCTV, but the 200 is part of an AGP video card (you won't have any AGP slots on your board).

I'll have to look over this stuff after work.  Right now, all I have time to tell you is to not get USB headsets.  They don't sound as good.  Also, order your headphones elsewhere--I just sent you to their page so you could browse their product line.  Their store is pricey compared to others.  For example, Newegg sells the 155 for $82.  I'd suggest the 150 for about $50.

Alright, I'm back from work.

Just to make sure, the monitor model number is VP930b.  Your link is to the correct model, so that was probably just a typo.  Make sure to get the PC150 headset instead of the 155 like I mentioned this moring.  Everything looks compatible.  I'll go ahead and do a compatibility breakdown for you so you're sure what I'm saying is true.

Code: [Select]
Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 Motherboard:
ATX 20/24-Pin Connector >> SeaSonic 20+4 Pin Connector

ATX Extra 4-Pin 12V Connector >> SeaSonic Extra 4-Pin 12V

Socket AM2 >> AMD A64 X2 AM2 CPU

PCI-E x16 Slots (2) >> eVGA GeForce 7900GT KO PCI-E x16 Video

PCI Slots (2) >> Turtle Beach Montego PCI Sound
              >> Future PCI TV Tuner (if wanted)

SATA Ports (6) >> WDC RE 250GB SATA
               >> WDC RE 250GB SATA

IDE Ports (1*) >> NEC ND-3550A DVD+/-RW

ATX Formfactor >> Gigabyte GZ-FSCA1-ANB ATX Tower

DDR2 DIMM Slots (4) >> 1GB Corsair PC2-800 DDR2 DIMM
                    >> 1GB Corsair PC2-800 DDR2 DIMM**

USB 2.0 Ports (6) >> Logitech Keyboard
                  >> Logitech Mouse
                  >> Printer in future if wanted
                  >> USB Thumbdrive and other temporary items such as digital camera, etc

PS/2 Connectors (2) >> Keyboard (alternate)

Network Interface >> LAN-based Internet access

Turtle Beach Montego PCI Sound:
Headphone 3.5mm Stereo >> Sennheiser PC150 Headset (Headphones)
Microphone-In Jack >> Sennheiser PC150 Headset (Microphone)

eVGA GeForce 7900GT KO PCI-E x16 Video:
DVI-I Connector >> DVI Cable (Included) >> ViewSonic VP930b LCD
PCI-E 6-Pin Extra Power >> SeaSonic PCI-E 6-Pin Extra Power Connector

Heatsink/Fan:
AMD K8 Mounting Bracket >> Gigabyte Mobo Bracket Frame
Fan 3-Pin Power >> Gigabyte Mobo 3-Pin Fan Power

NEC ND-3550A DVD:
Unit >> 5.25" Bay @ Top of Gigabyte Case

WDC RE 250GB SATA Drives:
Units >> 3.25" Bays @ Middle of Gigabyte Case
SATA Power Connectors >> SeaSonic SATA Power Plugs

That should cover all connection compatibilities.  As for components, they're all compatible with each other.  No problems that I can see with this thing working.  :agreed:

*One IDE channel supports two devices.
**Put one DIMM in each memory channel so you can utilize the faster dual-channel memory controller of your Athlon 64 X2.

Never mind. It says it right on the Newegg page.

<edit>
People are having trouble with the overly thin cord pulling out and they say the headphones don't fit around the ears, despite being labeled as circumaural.

Gamespot has a feature about XP game compatibility with Vista (beta version). So far, HL2 isn't working. Oblivion works great. Wondering about Morrowind.

Morrowind GotY's box says it supports the following chipsets. I'm wondering if it will work with the 7900GT (is the card too new to be listed?):

GeForce 4, GeForce 3, GeForce 2, GeForce 256, NVIDIA TNT2, Radeon 8500, Radeon 7500, Radeon 7200, Radeon, ATI Rage 128, Matrox G550, Matrox G450, Matrox G400.

Of course, a P3 is recommended, so maybe the GPU is just too new to be listed.

It's the exact same pair of headphones I've got.  You know how much I love them!  They are extremely comfortable (or I wouldn't wear them 8 hours a day), loud, and sound great.  The mic is noise cancelling and much clearer for voice comm than normal ones.  It should be painfully obvious by now that I use it for internet conversations all the time.  Heh.  Remember way back?  :)

The 7900GT should work great with Vista.
