Power Consumption?
« on: August 10, 2006 03:04 am CDT »
This topic alludes back to a previous thread, found here.

My friends and I were having this debate earlier today, whether it's better to leave your computer on at night by just putting into suspend/sleep/whatever, or turning it off. Considering the high number that was shown on my parent's last energy bill, we have decided to turn off all non-essential electronics at night time, even going so far as to unplugging the VCR's and TV when we're not using them (Apparently those still use small amounts of power even when not in use).

To sum it up, my friends leave their malarkey on at night, whereas I turn everything off, including the power strip, at night time. As Particle said:

Do you still plan on using your current computer in ten years?  No?  Leave it on.

But in regards to power consumption...how much will it be affected? What's the cost/benefit ration between power usage and computer life?

no matter how bad you think it is for energy use...It's the parts you need to worry about.Heating up cooling down isn't good for metal objects like that

Even a massive computer system only pulls about 250-300W when idle.

If you're that concerned with 70KWH/mo, by all means save the $4 extra it takes to run that computer at night.  To me, it's worth $4 per month to not have to wait for the damn thing to boot up every morning.

If you're using a laptop, it's more like 12KWH/mo--about 60-75 cents.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

If you're interested in power consumtion, you might consider purchasing a Kill-A-Watt meter from thinkgeek:  http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/7657/

I myself put my computer to sleep/suspend at night (so that the bubbling from the water cooler helps me sleep, yet the components are pretty much in an off state), and at work I shut down the computer when i leave.

I'm glad to see you are interested in this stuff.  During work, I sneak-read articles concerning green energy and the like.

A recent report by Tom Brokaw states that 40% of our energy consumption is the energy used to keep electronics 'warm', i.e. the TV keeping itself warm so the picture will appear quicker when you turn it on, or any fancy stereo equipment such as a surround sound speakers w/ subwoofer and equilizer, etc. VCR's and DVD players too.

I can understand 4% being that, but 40% just seems unbelieveable. I'm going to look into that further before I accept it as fact. But then again, it was CNN, so you can never know if it's truth =P

On a side note, I've tested some of the sounds in GTA: San Andreas on my stereo at normal volume.  The menu selection sound is the most power hungry note in the game at 900 watts.  The M16 was the second most power consuming sound at 850 watts.

Well that is important stuff to consider.  It doesnt seem apparent to many people that sound can have some pretty weighty power consumption, especially high-powered sound systems in cars.  One guy at a car forum I frequent said that since he installed a high powered sound system, his gas mileage drops to around 15mpg, most likely because his alternator is working double time.

Like Particle posted earlier. It really only costs about $5 a month to leave your computer on.  As for affecting the life of the computer I won't make a difference unless you expect to use that computer in 10 years. Realistically you would probably replace something in that 10 years anyway if you turn it off when you use it.

Unless you want to save $5-$10 a month on electricity leaving it on won't hurt.
