Help with XP admin
« on: August 17, 2006 12:07 am CDT »
Alright, here's the scoop: My little brother had been spending entirely too much time on the computer and wouldn't  observe the time limits that I was placing on him. So,  I decided to do something about it, and I read on some tech site about how you can go into a command prompt and throw in a code that allows a certain user to be able to log on at certain times. Well, I put it in place and it worked quite well, he's actually going outside and making new friends etc. But, in the process of putting the block of his account on our home desktop, I had entered in the code onto my laptop to test its effectiveness.

Well, I hardly ever shutdown my laptop (yes I know it's bad for it) so when I did yesterday, I had forgotten that I entered in the code that completely disallows me to log in to my account (which happens to be the only XP account on my laptop).

So now, I'm stuck with no laptop because I can't log in. How can I get past the block? Should I try changing settings in safe mode (if it even allows me)?

By "completely disallows" do you mean disallows during times (testing what you were doing) or disallows at all times whatsoever?

The first would be simple--change the system clock during boot.

If it's the second, let me know.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

I'm pretty sure it's the second, because the parameters I was setting for my little bro were between 9PM-12AM, and those parameters weren't allowing me to log in.

Well.. actually, now that I think about it.. I was trying to log in at 11:30, and my system clock is always running an hour fast. How do you do both? Thanks in advance Particle.

And yes, by disallows, I mean it denies me all around access--And I'm not 100% positive if set parameters or denied all access.

Ok, when your computer boots up enter your BIOS.  It should allow you to set the system clock--put it at say 10PM so you can login (hopefully).

If that doesn't work, post again.  It's by far the easiest solution.

Yup, done and done.. it didn't work.

It's constantly denying my login saying "Your account has time restrictions that prevent you from logging on at this time".

Nope, it's my personal laptop..  I only included a login window for security reasons (so nosy siblings and girlfriends couldn't get on).  :?

Check it, this is the link.

Could I enter in the following code, at the command prompt during startup?

net user accountname /times:all

Do you log on with your own account or Administrator?

I added your AIM to my ICQ list.  This will be a lot faster and easier to fix over an IM client.

If you use "Administrator" you are boned.  If you used anything else as your main account it's fixable by using the Administrator account.

You can get to a prompt via the recovery console, but the commands you can use are limited to the ones that are on the install CD.
