What would you do with four gigs of RAM?
« on: August 30, 2006 11:28 pm CDT »
I'm open to suggestions.  I just placed a $573 order for DDR2-900 (PC2-7200) memory...four gigs of it.

I can't exactly use it yet, but once I can I'll need suggestions for how I can waste RAM from day to day.  My machine only uses about 700MB during idle usage.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

Does it leak memory or would four gigs run it in that mode continuously?

How many source-powered games are there on the market now?
Whatever it is, run all of them. At once.

I say run multiple instances of Tribes RPG at the same time (if possible)

Then you could be cited for quintuple logging :D

I myself would split the ram between two computers, for now at least.  That is, for solutions regarding regular computing/gaming.

Considering that Windows XP only supports four gigs of memory total (by design--both 32-bit and 64-bit versions) including both RAM and swap, I'll finally be able to get rid of my page file.  It will be pointless, since I can't address beyond 4GB anyway.  Why include a slower HDD solution and give up real memory?

I've had up to 13 Tribes games running at once and could easily have handled more...it's doesn't take a whole lot to run Tribes.

I think I'll install Steam to a ramdisk to see how fast it loads.  There's one idea.

Any ideas on free ramdisk software that aren't just copies of MS's reference one (64MB limit)?

Or a fembot.  I'm sure they'd require lots of ram.
