Hey folks.  It's getting to be that time where I start complaining about my 3D hardware again.  I've got two real choices.

I'm currently using a Radeon X800XT Platinum Edition (R420).  I was wanting to get a DX10 card (G80/R600), but with them each sucking down about 250W by themselves I'd need a bigger PSU just to run the damn things safely.  That would run about 150-200 more dollars.

So.  It's a question of price versus power versus performance.

The R580 based cards (X1900XT) are really fast.  They're even faster than the GeForce 7900GT cards by about 10-15%.  Undoubtedly, R600 will be significantly faster, but will draw twice as much power as the X1900 and four times as much power as my X800.  More power means more money in electricity and more money since I'd need a new PSU.  However, it would give me DirectX 10 capability unlike current generation hardware.  Not sure how important that is going to become in the next year.

I know most of you don't know much about computers, but here's your opportunity to vote regardless!  Pick one.  I'll probably go with however the poll ends up by October 22, 2006.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

Just as a note to future posters, the last option is a wrong answer.  This X800 is too damn slow to play anything anymore.

Wait for the DX10 cards.  And don't buy it during the early adoption phase, where you spend $500 on the card.  Sit on your hands for 6 or more months, and you'll have more gas money.

To some of us, this poll reads like someone asking, "Should I upgrade to a Lamborghini Murcielago or a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti? Or should I just keep my crappy Mercedes-Benz CL600? Man, what a malarkey-heap."

I voted the last option, of course.

Seems like more people are cheap money savers instead of splurgers :P
Hey Particle, since you're planning on upgrading...how long do you think a GeForce 7800 GT will be able to hold its own before needing to be upgraded?

Perhaps a few months to half a year.  It's already outdated by other midrange cards such as the 7900GT or X1900XT.

I don't want to spend $150 on a new PSU just so I can use one.

Play games at a decent frame rate.  I get sick of 20fps in BF2 and CS pretty quickly.  Overclocking my CPU by 900MHz helped, but it's still not too great for the options I both need and want.  For instance, I need to run all games at 1600x1200, which can get taxing in the source engine and doom 3 if you like all the eye candy too.  Turning down the visuals isn't an option, so the only option left is to get something faster.
