buying a laptop
« on: November 26, 2006 07:39 pm CST »
so i think im going to be buying a laptop. ive been looking around online but thought i might ask here as well.

i need at least 100gigs of storage, a gig of ram and a wireless card. those are a must. i also need a decent video card. im looking to spend anywhere from 600-1500, but can go up to 2k if needed. i do photography for a living and need to be able to store tons of photos and software to edit it. also something that will at least be able to play tribes.

thanks to anyone who has any advice. :) i dont know much about laptops and someone here probably knows more than me.

Do you have a phone number?  I can direct you to a gateway dealer that can probably save you some money.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

http://system76.com/ is a linux computer vendor.  Their laptops are pretty affordable.  Loaded with Ubuntu Edgy 6.10.  All of them are capable of XGL/AIGLX/Beryl.

Linux isn't really something that people should be presented with.  It's something they need to find, if it is to be successfully adopted.

I suggested linux since I knew aphex had experience in it.  Oh, and let me tell you maam, it has improved A LOT in a year.

Firefox
Abiword / openoffice
The Gimp or Picasa for photo editing
XGL/compiz/AIGLX -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yw78IIEbzHs
Automatix to easily set up all codecs, install WINE, and other programs
Play tribes in just a couple of steps using wine
Stable and very very very little risk of viruses

And hey, if you arent happy (how could you not?), install windows over it or set up a dual boot with windows.  But you'd feel really, really bad if you did.

If you still need windows apps you can still use them perfectly. As long as they are not games.

http://http://www.vmware.com/products/server/

I am running ubuntu and installed vmware server.  Loaded up windows xp in it and it runs fast.  Not 100% but 90+% speed.   Best of all vmware server is totally free.   I am assuming you are familar with what a virtual machine is.

VMs are easy enough to learn to use even if not.
