I've seen it work elsewhere.  I suppose that they just post in whichever has the most posts now.  Wait a second... :)

That gives me an idea.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

Was that a light bulb going off over your head?  or are you just happy to see me?

I like what you've done there, but you know you've set yourself up for your own personal "Y2k".  I would've used a high number like 9999000, so you'd never have to deal with it again.

It's not any one piece of software doing this, folks.  Some go straight for forum ID 1, some go for the most posts, some go for the topmost sub-forum, and some go for subforums with specific names.  There's no one magical thing catch to stop them all.  I'm exploring ideas until we find a cocktail that works.  Don't be surprised if the spam continues for a while.

It's apparent that the CAPTCHA that phpBB uses currently has been cracked by about everybody.  We had less spam when I was using a pre-captcha version (v2 r12), actually.  I guess it was so damn old that the automated spambots weren't programmed to register on it.

Admin activation is something I've considered in the past but will only do if I have to.  People would have to wait hours or even days if I'm not in town.  That's not good for community building.

Apparently you have a new force to deal with in the 'spambot' world: real people getting paid to post messages. We've had a lot of problems with bots on Annihilation.info lately, no filter/mod seems to catch them all.

I'm not expecting a magical solution, and it's annoying that people are going "DEEEUUUR IT ISN'T WORKING" every time we get a new one.  I've said before that this isn't a cut and dry process.  It will take some time to find a winning combo that reduces what we're getting significantly.

I'm not really worried about sweatshop style labor.  The amount of forums on the internet that a room full of people can do compared to a single computer running fully automatic software is negligible.  Besides, they're only given the task of part of the software--doing the captcha.  They don't do anything else, as I understand it.  So, there are still ways to fork with them.

Either you aren't getting hit nearly as badly or you already have a better system, but I have to remove at least 5 spam posts a day, if not more.
And I know what it's like to have people complain that you aren't doing anything about the bots; they made an entire thread to tell us to 'install word boxes to stop them' on the registration page.

Have you tried http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=186683 ?
It locks out specific fields in the registration page (like signature, homepage) and bans bots that try to automatically fill those fields. The fields can be automatically activated again after a user makes a specified number of posts.

It's just constant moderation I'm guessing.  I remove about 6-12 spam threads per day.

Latin American spam, yay.

Mods are so annoying.

Looks like it's coming primarily from one person in latin america.  Anybody here post from there?  I'm probably just going to ban it.
