Swearing.
« on: December 11, 2006 07:04 pm CST »
Okay so I am gettin kind of sick of being punished by an admin for doing something that is not against the rules.  It is not absurd every-other-word, blatently annoying swearing; it is every once in a while.  That being said I keep getting banned by bonzai for ~5-10 minutes every time I swear on the server.

This is not an official rule.  Admins (excluding the owner) are on the server to enforce the rules that have been agreed upon by the servers managers.  If the managers believe that it is something that it is not appropriate for the server it should be made an official rule.

Player Actions.  Players will be expected to cooperate and try to get along.  After all, this is a game and games are meant to be a form of recreation, not court room battles.  Players will need to follow the guidelines in this document as well as all administrators and peacekeepers.

A set of rules can't be made to cover every situation or new 'loop hole'. It's the responsiblity of admins and peacekeepers to interpret and implement the rules and use them as a guideline for issues that arise in the server.

If you don't want to be kicked, then don't swear when those admins are around.

I brought this up the other day in the server also.  Swearing is not a "situational" thing.  If you say fork it does not matter by your rules so you should be kicked.  Easy, make a swear filter for the server.  There probably already is one coded, make the rule official and enforce it or stop enforcing it.

It's very situational. Most players are under 18, and several are even under 12. We've had 5 or 6 year olds playing. Normally, these players will play in the evenings and afternoons. This is the same time that Bonzai and Hubba (the admins most associated with enforcing no swear policies play). In the early hours of the morning/late at night, you usually find an older crowd playing, along with the admins that generally don't enforce no swearing policies.
Reguardless of who is playing, Hubba and Bonzai do not allow swearing. Why do you need swearing, anyway? Do you not have enough of a vocabulary to express yourself with other words? I get by fine without swearing as do many other players.

That is fine, this can still be fixed.  Make it so the rules show during a certain time it can be enforced and other times its not.  The point I am trying to make is that it needs to be standardized.  What if bonzai comes on at say 1am sometime and starts kicking people for it?  It may be appropriate to have the rules only enforcable during certain periods.  Its unfair to everyone to have a rule that is not defined in the rules!  How hard is that for you to understand?

yes.  I find swearing offensive and I'm 42, and pretty worldly as far as that goes;been round all types of people.  I'm no prude.

I find that most people who swear regularly are only doing so out of ignorance or trying to be accepted by a peer group.

Of course, a well placed swear word, used very infrequently can also be genius.

I just saw Tenacious D's "The Pick of Destiny" which, in my opinion "rocked", but I still think Jack Black could be a bigger star, and get more respect, if he didn't drop so many f-bombs.  I know in the D's movie, they were over-doing it for absurdity, but JB does it all the time.

As far as the kicking goes...follow the rules of the admins that are logged on.
Some cops you can slide by, some cops are out to get you.

Now...make me a sandwich.

BTW Bonz has been on this server Forevah!  he knows the rules and knows what works, same for Hubbster.

It is standardized. Bonzai and Hubba warn then mute or kick for swearing. Frankly, I don't know why they bother warning people who obviously know the rules. The rules haven't been updated in...ages. New players are warned and have the rules explained if they have an issue.

After you install tribes, the swear filter is on by default..  the only way for people to see your cursing is if they manually delete it out of their config folder.

Just a thought.

Beyond this, just don't curse..  I like to replace words like fork with words such as "fnord"..  yes, fnord.  Say it one time.  Fnord.  Now, throw it in the mix..

What the fnord just happened.

See?  Now you can curse all you want!

keep your fnording opinions to your fnording self. Flipping fnorderer.

(knows 12stones sees through the sarcasm, hopes for replies with othe colorful terms)

TRUE STORY:  I actually had a friend in high school who, once when taking a test in English class, yelled "FLAGPOLE"  in frustration, as loud as he could.  The teacher asked him in front of the class why he yelled "FLAGPOLE".  He said, "It's better than swearing."   I think he got an "A" that day.

Most versions of Tribes that you get nowadays are 'pirate' copies and often come without that filter (or with the words deleted). A lot of people don't even realize that Tribes does have a built in swear filter.

Someone would have to be pretty lame to get a 'pirate' copy of tribes when you can get it right here:
http://http://www.pcrpg.org/main.php?action=viewpage&page=downloads&viewcat=1

For FREE even!

Someone should just make a pcrpg tribes install. Full tribes with rpg and deus already installed.

Edit: Much better link to download.

y'know you can just copy the directory onto another computer.  I installed it once, then transferred the directory to other systems via my network.  You still have to know what to put in your desktop icon's command line though. Fnorderer.

Here are my thoughts on this to help you understand why and how I enforce a "swearing" policy when I am in the server.

1). Very young children play on this server at times.
2). Excessive foul language/comments incites intense hostility among players.
3). Many people find it offensive and #tell me that all the time.

As I have said many times before, simple cuss words like malarkey, crap, asshole, buttwipe, unsavory woman, etc... are NO problem with me and are expected as normal. I will not ask you to refrain from cussing for these and similar words.

The foul stuff is where you get in trouble. IE...  C word, F word, racial slurs,  etc..       Earlier today a different player was globally discussing the merits of having the company of a diseased prostitute in detail. Not acceptable.... These are examples of cases where I feel it has gone too far. These examples are offensive and will not be tolerated.  Get the idea?

Let's get the punishments you received tonight straight. It seems you've left out the details when you posted here.  Your posting suggests I kick you every time you cuss.  Not true.  You had been asked many times to stop the nasty remarks. I muted you for 5 minutes. You did it again, 5 more minutes. Then you had to say the C word. So I kicked you. Once.....

Here are the punishments/warnings I use when people get carried away with the excessive cussing:

First time is a verbal warning.
Second time, 5 minutes muted.
Third time and all subsequent offense 5 minutes jail.
Continous and repeatitive excessive cussing will get you more time.
If you drop and come back to avoid the mute then the time is reset to the beginning of the punishment as jail time.

Now in all of this you will notice that I use the word "excessive". That means if you just simply slip up and cuss once in a while and realize you made a mistake, then no harm/no foul.  No problem! Get excessive or repetitive and it's a different deal.

I'd be glad to discuss this with you in greater detail if you wish. I'm available for anyone needing my help or just wanting to discuss an issue. My email and MSN messenger address is rmeint@hotmail.com

Please re-read the rules. Admins are allowed a bit of leeway in order to keep some semblance of order in the server and not let things get carried away. We're allowed to refine the rules as we see the need for it. That may be the precious "rule" you are looking and asking  for.

By 'Pirate' I simply meant any non-official (like the gamespy download) version of the game. The link you posted is a perfect example. While I'm sure Particle's version for download is a straight from CD edition, there are many other versions available for download (like you also suggested) with scripts and customizations preinstalled so that new players (or those without script-installing ability) can enjoy some of those very cool scripts that people write. I'm sure most of these versions probably remove the swear filter.

I prefer the http://www.Tribes0.com edition which comes fully patched and ready to play.
A version with RPG and Deus installed would be cool to have for download for new players, too...
