Tribes in Dapper Drake
« on: March 14, 2007 03:15 pm CDT »
Curious to see if any of you have manage to get Tribes to run in Dapper Drake. I did some googling and saw that a application known as Wine will allow me to maybe play tribes under Dapper, but at the time I wanted to obtain the application the server for winehq.com was down so I will attempt tonight when I get off work. Just wondering if I'm just wasting my time or should I make a attempt?

When I download tribes the game, it's not extracted from the exe form I downloaded in, I'm thinking I could just unpackage it myself in XP, load it up to the net (somewhere) and download it in .rar form or something other under my Ubuntu partition. Possible?

EDIT: 15 MARCH 2007 \\ 04:45AM EST

Did some googling while I afked in Cavern and found some more resources, newbie guides and some general documents to couple of my issues. Getting kind of tired so I won't be able to put this new found knowledge to the test but I believe I found my answer to the Wine issue. Will let you know the results tomorrow morning.

I am running tribes in dapper drake myself.  I never had much luck with it working under wine. Maybe that has changed but I ended up buying cedega http://http://www.transgaming.com.  Works great with opengl and runs as fast/faster than windows.  It has an annoying habit of stealing my mouse whenever the tab menu pops up. :(

I'm seem to have problems getting Tribes to run under Wine, it crashes and I'm not even sure that it crashes. It just doesn't start. I get a dialog box but it seems to quickly disappear. Tried to run it in the command line and the same results. I'm going to try and tinker with it a bit and see if I can get it working.

Checked out your transgaming website, 55 USD, I want to be sure it's going to work but since you gave the OK guess I'll go ahead and get it. Get it downloaded once I get home from work tonight and give it a go.

Sidenote: I find that Dapper isn't that bad of a OS once you get use to figuring everything out. The terminal has been my biggest challenged but I've figured out how to use my most common commands. Just might give up XP altogether but my wife isn't as tech savvy as I am so I have to keep it around. But she just surfs the web anyway. Think she will be alright.

I will keep you posted.

I know for sure that tribes runs under cedega. It's the only way I play tribes. I've read tribes is supported under wine so if you get it to work then you can save some money.

If all you do under windows is surf then you should look into vmware. http://http://www.vmware.com/download/server/.  You can run windows in a window or fullscreen under linux.  Its free too.  The server version gives you more configuration options than the player version.
