New Motherboard
« on: February 22, 2003 04:11 pm CST »
Hey, I'm changing the tim.xfury.net host's board.  I purchased an A7N8X for the server machine, which should provide higher performance than the current A7V333.

I've had some trouble with the A7V333 when it comes to IDE performance (the 2xWD1200JB stripe) performs worse than a single drive on a non VIA board.  Time for some fun!

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

If all my RAM had worked, that would be reading over 1,600,000 KB right now.

Thought I'd give XP a 4th chance.  I did.  It sucks more every time.  The concept of suck is not sufficient.

I just helped Dominik select a system.  Here's what I came up with.  Whole computer for under 1500$

AMD ATHLON XP 2600 /333 FSB PROCESSOR CPU               $261.00
Asus A7N8X Deluxe                     $145.99
ATi radeon 9700 pro                    $283.00
CRUCIAL MICRON 512MB 64x64 PC 2700 DDR RAM CL=2.5 $82.99
VIEWSONIC E95 19" (18" Viewable) MONITOR          $221.00
Logitech Elite Keyboard                 $36.00
Logitech MX 500                   $46.00
Raidmax Model 268WUP(BLUE/SILVER) Case 350W              $52.99
TOSHIBA 16X DVD-ROM Model SD-M1712 OEM                    $42.00
YAMAHA BLACK CD-RW 44x24x44 MODEL              $115.00
Floppy                      $5.00
Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM Hard Drive                                      $95.00
Logitech Z640 5.1 Speakers                                               $67.00

Gotta love SBC with their 6Mbps tier for 45$
(Yes, on their site it only shows 3Mbps, but it is actually 6Mbps, I would know :)).

Wrong RAM, Monitor, CD-RW, and HDD.

Use Geil/Corsair RAM, a P1110 FD-Triniton (21" and looks better, can be had for about the same price), LiteOn 52x24x52x CD-RW (only about 75 dollars), and then get a Seagate Barracuda IV for fastest boot times.

We were also going on a budget, remember that.  The Seagates have a little higher seektime than that Maxtor.  And yes, I just checked NewEgg.com and found that same Lite On.  Didn't see it last night.  That ram is also on sale, nothing wrong with Crucial either.  Monitor is fine.

I went ahead with the Deluxe simply because it has much more accesories and Dominik won't be upgrading for another 2 years he claims.  I figure those goodies will suffice.

Btw, those are your opinions, right?
