New Blizzard Game
« on: May 16, 2007 10:24 pm CDT »
So Blizzard Entertainment will be announcing a new game this weekend. It could be any one of these:

Diablo 3
Warcraft 4
Starcraft 2
"World of Starcraft"
Starcraft Ghost

But to be honest, I think it's going to be Starcraft 2. For example, just look at these two sites...

http://www.starcraft2.com
http://www.blizzard.com

And tell me if you notice any resemblance. ANY at all.
Anyone else psyched about this?

Is there no possibility of an all new game?

Although... I would prefer SC2, assuming it's as good as the first one... which isn't likely.

They did finally do it, but from the looks of things so far, SCII doesn't seem like it'll be nearly as good as the first.

Koro did you see the gameplay stuff from the Worldwide Invitational?

If not:

All I can say is.... GG.

My only complaint is.. how long the units seem to survive, and the unit movement speed is kind of slow. =/

Looks good considering what the old SC looked like. Just hope they make the races more evenly matched.

Yeah I did see it, Artorius. It's nice, but the fckin changed the zealots to have that special power. They're basic units they're not supposed to have any special powers!

And the addition of jump-jet units is another thing. When I first used that type of unit in Tiberian Sun, I found it to be the most annoying and useless kind of unit ever. If they're ground units in ground armor, then they should just forking walk!!

And the merging between Warp Gate/Gateway + that one unit makes it even less Starcraft ish. It's one thing to be able to warp stuff in without needing a builder unit, but to be able to teleport them anywhere on the map when using that one Prism unit makes it f'ed up. THATS WHAT AN ARBITER WAS FOR.

I could go on and on and on, but I'm not a happy camper. This is looking less and less like StarCraft.

That prism is the new Arbiter.  Those "jump jets" are a clone off of the Warden's ability to blink in wc3.  Those units will allow for my strategic possibilities in combat.  I am personally happy with every single change I've seen so far.  I've sat here for hours on end with the cinematic trailer on loop.  Also, basic units not having special powers?  What about the marines and firebats and their stim packs.  The teleport system works almost like it did with the Arbiter.  If you wanted the sequel to just be StarCraft with upgraded graphics then you have no idea what good games are.  They have to change things and add new things or it's not a sequel.

I understand that change is neccessary. Considering the storyline is to be advancing, I would come to expect change. After all, it's only natural.

But it just seems to me like they're going overboard on the change. Like they're trying to reinvision it rather than evolve it.

Zealots got a leg upgrade in the original anyways, they were amongst the fastest ground units. (I still don't like how long they lasted against that huge swarm of zerglings, hopefully it's just part of the demo)

I'm pretty sure I've seen a screenshot with a probe next to a building warping in, I can only hope that probes are still required for building.

Anyways, I have faith that blizzard will make it balanced, although I'll miss walling in as Terran and being able to handle 7 comps/toss cheese rushes.

An upgrade is one thing, but an ability is another. I guess I'm just a fundamentalist...

How do you know that it won't require an upgrade for the ability?  The description said that only the toughest could do it.  That hints at an upgrade being required.

The zealots being able to easily decimate swarms of zerglings is nothing new.  Zerg's biggest enemy early game has always been Protoss, but I also have faith that Blizzard can balance things just like you.

About the change, you have to realize that people have been playing the same thing for around 9 years now.  They can't make subtle changes, they have to make big changes.  What would be the fun of going into sc2 and not having to learn anything new?

A good comparison of game mechanics change is when Blizzard when from WarCraft2 to WarCraft3.  Those were some big changes.  Blizzard was still able to keep the same type of game and keep the original fans happy.
