OC's are fiber.  DS's are copper.  OC's handle more data.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

I have a really good question, why dont giant corps just keep making more backbone lines? If they did, bandwidth would be more plentiful, and the internet would continue to flourish. Did any of you notice how your bandwidth was significantly less for a few days after MCI shut down? I say that if we have alot of backbones in high populated areas (NYC and CA cities) and at least one backbone in every major city (like Chicago, Memphis, Dallas, etc) everyone would be much happier.

Dont know why I even started talking about that, I just want my DSL modem to reach its maximum download speed of 8mbps.

Oh shizzit!  I forgot that a technology park is forming right next to my grandparents house!  Shibby!

There's enough "dark" fiber already layed out to support our needs for probably 5-10 years.  Basically, they've already done what you're asking Dar, they just aren't using it.

Well, why are they holding out on us?  It just doesnt make sense.  The public needs their 2 MB/s downloads and 10 CS pings.

If I become an eccentric billionaire, you can count on me to put an OC3 backbone in your neighborhood.

They don't because what it would cost to "light" it outweighs the money they would gain with current demands.

America wants money.  If we were after betterment or something, we'd have internet like Korea or Hong Kong.

Hmm, I thought Asians enjoyed surfing on slow wireless devices such as phones and PDA's, according to PC World magazine, October issue in the article: Japan Loves Wireless.

Its all about location.  My dad's DSL line when he first got it only had a downstream speed of 655 kbps.  After a buisiness opened up about a half-mile from our house, our bandwidth shot up to 1.2mbps downstream.

DSL isn't directly effected like that.  Only if the ISP bought more bandwidth, cleaned up the phone line the business was using (which you may go through), or changed settings/packages then you would be effected.  Take note that DSL does NOT suffer from cable's distribution problem.

And that's what makes DSL kick so much more ass than Cable.  Take that you Time Warner Road Runner sons-of-biotches!  Your connection sucks!

In my area, although this isn't true everywhere, to get the same upstream from DSL that I get regularly during peak hours with my cable would cost 90 dollars a month (whereas I pay under 40 after discounts for getting a cable company package).  And that's being under 400ft from the closest CO.

You can't DL 2MB/s on cable either.  There isn't 20Mbit/node of bandwidth in the first place.  Closer to about 10.

I used to like cable a few years ago.  I liked it how I was getting near-instant release of fire when sniping on TFC and stuff.  It actually tickled me.  Unfortunately, where I live, the technitians who set it up do a slap-dash job.  Half the people I know who have Time Warner Communications for providing their cable connection lose their connection for an hour or so every now and then when it rains.  Now I'm sure that isnt true for alot of people, but right now I'm steering clear of cable.

Something else I'm wondering.  I think they should create a higher-end connection for the home user.  Now, I know that DSL and Cable (which averages at $45 a month) is what we could call high end, but what about those who want to get say 200-250kb/s downloads and 10-35 pings?  It would be like the gamers-choice for broadband gaming.  Probably perhaps maybe a $60-$75 a month connection fee?
