Powerline adapter -- Cables
« on: April 15, 2003 10:04 pm CDT »
Ok.  For christmas I got two Linksys powerline bridge adapters.  At a friend's house(using his own cables), they worked fine.  Before installing it on my home comp, I bought a few ethernet cables (all of the same brand/make -- different lengths though).  When trying to use this at my house, I used the same setup as my friends house, but I get no signal, not even powerline adapter to computer signal.

It has been a few months, so I gave it another shot today (to see if it was my lucky day).  Unfortunately, it isnt.

So today I swallow my pride and call up linksys tech support.  I get a barely understandable asian chick on the line (linksys has sucky tech support).

She told me, after running me through a few tests, that I may not be running the right cable.  She said I need a straight-through UTP ethernet cable.

Im not sure what kind of cable I am running.  Perhaps one of you might know if it is or not.

Here is what it reads on the side of the cable:
BELKIN COMPONENTS CATEGORY 5e PATCH CABLE #R7J304 VERIFIED (UL) CAT 5e 4PR 24AWG TYPE CM OR MP E129760-C

It's just a straight cable.  You aren't using a crossover or anything (good).

I think I am going to take the adapters to a friend's house to try them out with his cables.  If they work, maybe he and I can make a trade or something.

Gotta love SBC with their 6Mbps tier for 45$
(Yes, on their site it only shows 3Mbps, but it is actually 6Mbps, I would know :)).

Heh, for one Linksys technical support was right.  I found an old ethernet cable that I threw away months ago (I havent emptied my bathroom wastebasket in months) hanging on the side of the basket and tried it out on the adapters, and it worked.  On the side it reads: UTP certified.

One of my favorite terms:  Computer-stupid.  (not calling anyone that, just related to Jason's post)

Got my powerline network running.  It seems that I always make the most simple of mistakes from getting the devices I buy from running.

The network runs great.  Counter-Strike and Quake III have pings around 10-15, and I'm happy.

I also dont have to worry about my friends screen hacking, since I can move them to any room in the house now.

Just remember, like devices connect with a crossover (hub to hub, comp to comp)

different devices connect with a straight-through cable...

I just made my first successful utp cable on thursday ;) crossover

I know, but its just so dumb how my linksys switch REQUIRES straight through cables.  I cant use any type of crossover cable.

I probably bought like 50-60$ of ethernet cable, wasted now  :?
