bah, dont ever buy the asylum 5600 fx
« on: April 26, 2003 05:45 pm CDT »
i made the mistake of buying a BFG Asylum 5600 fx.. at first, it looks awesome, 256 mb is very catching, but once i installed it.. BAH what such sh*t of video card.... i decided to take it back, and get my radeon 9500 pro back (i had to get a refund 3 weeks back for it, because i needed the money for insurance)... anyone else make such a stupid mistake like mine lol?

Did it just not run well, or was the difference between that card and your last not even noticeable?  What was wrong with it..

You mean consumer cards now come with 256 mb DDR?  Cool.  Maybe if your mobo's agp slot ran at 8x, you would have gotten much better performance.

The 5600's are pieces of malarkey because they use 128-bit ram.  Get a Radeon 9500 non-pro with the L-shaped memory architecture and use the driver hack to think it's a 9700 and it will utilize the 256-bit ram that is onboard.  It can even outperform a 9700 Pro if OC'ed enough.  Only thing it doesn't have that the 9700 Pro does is 8 pipelines,  9500's have 4.

The 9800 Pro might come in 256MB versions, I'm unsure though.

-edit-

I think the 5600's actually use 64-bit ram, chop that memory bandwidth in quarter of the 9700 and you can only imagine the type of performance hit.

Gotta love SBC with their 6Mbps tier for 45$
(Yes, on their site it only shows 3Mbps, but it is actually 6Mbps, I would know :)).

No matter how long your wait to buy hardware, the moment you do, they come out with one better, and the price of what you just bought drops. 'Tis the way of the computer industry...
