Back around 2004, we used to have a full server (24 slots I think) pretty much every night. It was to the point that the server would start to lag due to the player count. IronMaiden was helping me out with hosting in those days as I couldn't afford to purchase a dedicated server by myself. That didn't change until I think 2008 when I moved us to a DS or VPS hosted with 1&1. The 1&1 server helped, but it was just a P4 machine. After about a year there, I deployed a custom 1U server named "Aoede" to a data center in Kansas City in 2008. It was a dual, quad-core AMD Opteron 2350 machine with 16 GB of RAM and mirrored 7200 RPM SATA disks on a DS3. That move eliminated any remaining performance issues, but by that time the player count had waned considerably. We'd still have maybe 10 players on or so in the evenings. In 2012 that server was upgraded to a 12-core Opteron 6234 with 64 GB of RAM, and a second 1U box was added to the facility to act as a high performance and powerful router/firewall. It's too bad that these aren't our high player count days as today they could be served with much less lag.
It looks like stats haven't updated since we moved the server to 1&1. I suppose it could be made to start updating again if that is a desirable feature. I think this is the first report about it I've had in the six years it has been broken, however. heh
