Yes, this server is legitimate. This is the (currently) experimental server I am running out of Washington DC. For the purposes of this post, I will be referring to the normal PCRPG server as PCRPG Regular and the experimental server as PCRPG Washington.
Details about its existence are as follows:
- All characters from PCRPG Regular are available on PCRPG Washington as they were at around noon on March 2, 2008.
- Character files modified on PCRPG Washington will not reverse-replicate to PCRPG Regular for the time being.
- Character files modified on PCRPG Regular will not replicate to PCRPG Washington for now, either.
- PCRPG Washington should allow for a smoother experience with more players. It is a 64-player server (for now) and is setup to allow 8KB/s per client (versus 1.2KB/s on PCRPG Regular).
- After a trial period, the PCRPG Regular may migrate to PCRPG Washington if everything goes well.
- PCRPG Washington has a 100Mbps dedicated connection to the Internet while PCRPG Regular has a 1.544Mbps connection shared with others.
- PCRPG Washington is a 3.0GHz Pentium 4 with 1GB of RAM running Windows Server 2003.
- PCRPG Washington is available via: tribes-washington.pcrpg.org or tribes.pcrpg.org. If you modify a shortcut to Tribes as follows, you will be able to auto-connect just by double-clicking it: "C:\blahblahblah\Tribes.exe" +mod RPG +connect tribes-washington.pcrpg.org:28001. You can do the same for the regular server by using tribes-texas.pcrpg.org. Using these domain names makes sure you're always connecting to the genuine PCRPG servers. They maintain the right IP address for you!
PCRPG Washington may incorporate experimental features during the trial phase. If you have suggestions for reasonable extensions or modifications to the game, please suggest them here. I'll see about adding them.
