Yo im looking for a cheap system for $300 bucks im planning on making it myself

sound: above
lan: above
proc: duron 1.6ghz new newegg $47 (need fan) shipping: free
modem: take from emachine?

case + psu: $45
cdrom: $13 refurb newegg shipping: $1
hd: $40 (40 gig) $1

total: $208 not including tax or shipping

missing keyboard, mouse, cpu fan, and monitor
keyboard/mouse = like $10

Seems like a fine setup, except I recommend you spring for AMD Athlon XP 2000+ Retail - $57.00 on account it has a much bigger cache than the duron and a fan is included.

And if you dig under the couch and find some more change, you might want to consider this.

Double the cache size and faster fsb.

Just purchased a AMD Xp2400 thoroughbred -retail the other day-its a nice 2.0ghz processor for the 70 bux i spent! Comes with your heatsink and fan--You got to add all those to you price if you havent already. Don't forget to add maybe a coolermaster case fan!

Also if you want to cut costs--go with a cheaper case! 45 bux/ you could probably cut that in halfor at least shave 15 bux of the price for an Ugly case!

speaking of computers... I got a 70% average. My mom said that if I get 70% average she will let me get a comp of my own... partly to get me off the family computer. But anyways I have saved up $1100... what should I be looking for in a computer? I not a hardware kinda guy so I would like some input.

You may want to read up and learn about all the parts of a computer before building one.

The basics are processors, motherboards, cooling, RAM, and video cards.

Sites where you can check up on the latest hardware are:
http://www.tomshardware.com/
http://www.hardocp.com/
http://www.slashdot.org
http://www.newegg.com

Make sure you also learn how to properly assemble computers (especially when installing a cooling device on a processor).

For $1000+, you can build an AWESOME system with all the latest and greatest stuff!
