Windows Longhorn
« on: November 13, 2004 09:25 am CST »
What is it about longhorn that makes it so bloated?  You see the recommended specs of this OS on forums showing very steep requirements (2.0ghz and above normally).  I took a look at some screenshots, and there was nothing fancy about it.  Just looked like windows XP with a few more features.

Screenshots here:  http://www.winbeta.org/comments.php?id=1990

What is the point of longhorn?  Windows XP turned out to be a fine operating system, and extremely stable for me (so long as I use mozilla).  I remember on either HardOCP or Slashdot that Longhorn would incorporate DX9 shaders into its operating system.  WHY?!?!  There is no reason to that!  In my eyes, microsoft will soon be fighting an uphill battle as linux becomes more user friendly and widespread.   Linux XP anyone?

WTF?
http://www.tuxfiles.org/antihelp/linux-xp.html

What was that one distro that morphed Linux really into Windows XP mostly?

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

I believe you are talking about Lindows.

Untill *nix supports full error-free emulation of windows applications (This includes .net) Windows will be on top.

I honestly think java should be the official gaming language. A lot of people say it is much slower than c++, but no one has built a gigantic game yet to prove it.

If software companies were to pick up java, it would put MS under.

No, no, not Linspire.  There was a distro or at least a UI that transformed linux to look and feel mostly like Windows XP.  The theme was a bit weak, but it had the normal stuff like display properties and familiar Explorer-like windows, Control Panel, etc...all made to look like Windows XP.  It wasn't finished quite yet.

Have you ever run a Java app?  It's less responsive than VB5 was.  I've used a few.

I program in java, and in a GUI program, I see no difference between that and VB as far as speed goes. The only difference is that it takes longer to start up because of loading the VM.

EDIT: Anyone remember that "mmorpg" that was being created? Someone posted it, but I forget. The players would "design" the world, and it would evolve around that..

I forget it now, but that was in Java, and it ran quite well. It also had graphics that were similar to T2's

I did, and I was screwing with you. You can tell if something is written in java by looking in your processes list. If you see "java" running, you have something using java.

I also think you neglect to realize how fast applets and sevlets run.

I went to a discount bookstore and got everything I could on Java hoping to learn alot, but only got to chapter 5 or so before I got bored.  I couldn't see any practical uses for it at the time to make me want to continue reading.  Maybe I'll pick it back up again.

Java is a universal language... It is used in many professional web sites. It is used in all of your "yahoo" games like chess checkers. You can write apps in a console that operate almost as fast as c++ (You won't notice unless you are viewing something like a 5-10GB database app). You can also easily create GUI apps. Much easier than c++.

The best part is java is completely object oriented. This means you can easily create little things and use them in something else to speed things up.

It will run on just about any operating system. This includes *nix, Mac, OS/2, Windows, novell.
