I am thinking of getting a Chill Vent.  Reviews show quite a significant drop on temperature w/ these.

I built a computer for a girl I know today.  Used Arctic Silver 5 instead of a thermal pad on an AMD Duron 700mhz processor w/ stock air cooler.  Regular operating temps: 28 - 31 celcius.  34C load.  Should I be getting any lower?

Another question regarding the thermal compound.  Will it need to be reapplied in the future? This computer will be used by the user for very casual use, so it wont be going under any strain past 31C.

That is kind of... a sketchy business.

The thermal compounds have been shown to act as an insulator once they get about a year old as they crack from continual heat exposure and use.

Some review sites say that if you are serious about your thermal compound, you will clean it off an reapply it every year.

Of course... I have only used thermal pads... and those allegedly don't have the same problems as the compounds.

I am not expert on that business though...

Also... It's sad  to see that some one beat me to the punch and got the cold sweep out in to production before me.... oh well!  Mine had more fans and variable adjustments though... probably too damn expensive for most typical useres though (my design.)  Ahh well :-p

I recieved my X-Dreamer II case, and it really does look more amazing in person.  Unfortunately, the PS was DOA.

I tried using my other Desktop's PS (from gateway, not sure what brand PS or how many watts) but the thing just made noises when I plugged it in to the xdreamer (blip blip blip blip blip).

I'll just get newegg to swap me out a new PS and I should be good to go.

dude... that PS sucks!

You should get the one I have had 2 of so far:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... 974&depa=1
**edit**  I've had two because there are 2 in two different machines I own... this being one of the machines.  It's run solid so far. :-)

It's pretty darn good... of course it costs allmost 3x as much as that POS powmax, but this one also won't fry your hardware when it goes bad.
;-)

It's up to you to decide, but the "generic" power supplies just are not cutting it any more, especially when I have had 2 go bad and 1 DOA in the last 5 years.  That's a pretty bad ratio when you consider that all my generic power supplies from the late 90's would still be working fine if I still used my AT machines.
:-p

Peace.

Particle recommends Antec or Sparkler PSUs.  True430 is $70, Tru500 is $100, but they are worth it.  Very minimal ripple in the rails.
